have you considered controlled sport hunting as a conservation incentive to land owners, giving the animal an economic value much higher than what ecotourism can give? i think these ranches can work with this concept and with the economic income destinate on cattle loss and jaguar reaserch...

i forgot, its beautiful to look up for deer and watch them drinkin water in the river side when you are kayakin, they dont see you coming because of the water sound and you can get about 15 or 20 feet close, before they jump and run

Thanks for visiting, Paul. I agree with you about the importance of jaguars and other wildlife to the soul of our country. However, I fear that the forces of greed, exploitation and expediency have louder voices.
Fingers crossed for a thorough investigation into Macho B's death- I think they're either doing one hell of a job or they're treading water in the hope that people will lose interest and they can release some CYA document.

I fear that the FWS will conduct only a nominal criminal investigation, stopping at 'letter of the law' violations . Make no mistake, I am thankful for this alone but far more is at stake here. That these magnificent animals range in to and dwell in the Arizona Sky Island country makes them as deeply important a part of the American patrimony as the Florida Panther, the Alaskan Grizzly , the buffalo or the bald eagle. Obviously, the Jaguar has and God willing, will continue to play an integral role in the existence of a balanced, fully functional borderlands ecosystem. Protecting the North American Jaguar is, in my view, a moral as well as an ecological necessity. It is my fervent hope that, regardless of its legal outcome, this investigation will lead the way to vigorous Federal
protection of the Jaguar and the remote regions of his range.

Thanks as always, Tony.
I think if someone in the government sees their job as part of the problem and not the solution, then perhaps its time to find another gig.

Thanks for your comments, Sergio. I agree with you, especially the "paid as bureaucrats trying to avoid bureaucracy" line. Well said!

I'm glad to read your comments on this. We're finally starting to see who the "leaders" of this conservation team are - paid as bureaucrats trying to avoid bureaucracy. If you dig in it just a little, the recovery of Mexican gray wolves has a very similar story, in the arena of "regulatory burdens".

And did you notice there was no mention of science? So, instead of science, the way decisions are made is with a "magic concoction"?
