My feelings about the recent USFWS jaguar ruling are best summarized by that wonderful conservation thinker, Aldo Leopold. He was referring to grizzlies, but if you change Canada and Alaska to Mexico and South America and grizzlies to jaguars you get the point.
“There seems to be a tacit assumption that if grizzlies survive in
Canada and Alaska, that is good enough. It is not good enough
for me. . . . Relegating grizzlies to Alaska is about like
relegating happiness to heaven; one may never get there.”
