Tony Davis of the Arizona Daily Star has a good blog entry here on the recent photos of a jaguar near the proposed Rosemont mine in Arizona. I understand David Brown’s strictly biological viewpoint but I find it a less than satisfying way of viewing the world. I realize that a single animal represents just that, a single animal, but what an animal! How can you look at those pictures and not be thrilled by the idea that a jaguar, a jaguar, calls Arizona home? That’s worth protecting and celebrating, in my opinion. The strict requirements of critical habitat under the ESA may not come into play here but I cherish the idea of el tigre wandering around the Santa Ritas, scaring the shit out of the javelinas.
